Γιός του γιατρού Αναστασίου Γκελεστάθη και της Ιωάννας Γκελεστάθη το γένος Παπαγεωργίου ο Νίκος Γκελεστάθης γεννήθηκε στη Δεσφίνα Φωκίδος μεσούσης της θητείας του πατέρα του στην Προεδρεία του χωριού μας. Το όμορφο χωριό μας έχει σήμερα μια πολύ μεγάλη πλατεία στο κέντρο του γύρω από την οποία έχει αναπτυχθεί ολόκληρη η κοινωνική και οικονομική ζωή του. Η πλατεία αυτή δημιουργήθηκε ταυτόχρονα με τη γέννηση του Νίκου Γκελεστάθη εν μέσω των θυελλωδών αντιδράσεων που προκάλεσε η απόφαση του πατέρα του για την απαλλοτρίωση μερικών δεκάδων σπιτιών προκειμένου να καταστεί εφικτή η δημιουργία της πλατείας για την ύπαρξη της οποίας είναι σήμερα ευγνώμονες όλοι οι συγχωριανοί μας. Ήταν το πρώτο πολιτικό μάθημα που πήρε ήδη στην κούνια του. Ότι πολιτική σημαίνει να τολμάς να γίνεσαι πρόσκαιρα δυσάρεστος για να γίνεσαι μακροπρόθεσμα ωφέλιμος. ακόμη από τα αδέρφια του Ελένη, Αθανάσιο, Αικατερίνη, Γεώργιο και Μαρία μετακόμισε στην Αθήνα όπου και παρέμεινε μέχρι το 1940. Εκεί παρακολούθησε τις τέσσερις πρώτες τάξεις του δημοτικού. Με την κήρυξη του πολέμου η οικογένεια μετακόμισε και πάλι στο χωριό μας για να αντιμετωπίσει προσφορότερα την πείνα και τις κακουχίες. Είναι τα χρόνια κατά τα οποία μαζί με τον αδερφό του Γεώργιο προκειμένου να συνεχίσουν το σχολείο ξεκινούσαν κάθε Δευτέρα πρωί από τη Δεσφίνα περπατούσαν τρεις ώρες μέχρι την Άμφισσα και φιλοξενούνταν σε συγγενικό σπίτι μέχρι το μεσημέρι του Σαββάτου όταν και έπαιρναν το δρόμο της επιστροφής στη Δεσφίνα που όμως ήταν ανηφορικός και η ανάβασή του χρειαζόταν τρεισήμισι ώρες. Είναι λογικό ότι αυτή η γενιά με αυτά τα βιώματα στην πορεία δεν πτοήθηκε από καμία αντιξοότητα, αντιπαρερχόταν κάθε εμπόδιο και ατένιζε πάντοτε αισιόδοξα τη ζωή. Με το τέλος του πολέμου ήρθε μια ακόμη αλλαγή. Η οικογένεια μετακόμισε εκ νέου στην Αθήνα και εκεί ο Νίκος Γκελεστάθης παρακολούθησε τις τέσσερις τελευταίες τάξεις του γυμνασίου. Στη συνέχεια φοίτησε στη Νομική Σχολή Αθηνών και αμέσως μετά υπηρέτησε στον Ελληνικό Στρατό.
Η περίοδος που ακολούθησε ήταν πολύ παραγωγική καθώς μετά από ένα πέρασμα από το δικηγορικό γραφείο του Εμμανουήλ Μενεγάκη όπου πήρε το βάπτισμα του πυρός, εργάστηκε ως νομικός σύμβουλος μεγάλων εταιρειών της εποχής όπως της Αλβέρτης Δημόπουλος και της Μονυάλ. Εξελίχθηκε σε πολύτιμο συνεργάτη τους και παράλληλα δημιουργήθηκε ο ίδιος – επαγγελματικά, κοινωνικά, οικονομικά. Εργασιομανής, ικανός και αποτελεσματικός από τότε θυμούνται οι συνεργάτες του της περιόδου εκείνης. Κύριος, ευγενής και γενναιόδωρος διηγούνται οι φίλοι του της νυχτερινής διασκέδασης η οποία πάντοτε διεπόταν από την ευπρέπεια και την αρχοντιά της εποχής. Το μικρόβιο ωστόσο της πολιτικής τον είχε ήδη προσβάλει και παρασκηνιακά βρισκόταν συνεχώς στο πλευρό του αδερφού του Αθανασίου, Βουλευτή Φωκίδος.
Ο ίδιος εξελέγη για πρώτη φορά Βουλευτής Φωκίδος το 1981 διαδεχόμενος τον αδερφό του Αθανάσιο και έκτοτε δεν έχασε σε καμία εκλογική αναμέτρηση. Οι συμπολίτες του τον τίμησαν με την ψήφο τους το 1985, τον Ιούνιο του 1989, τον Νοέμβριο του 1989, το 1990, το 1993, το 1996 και το 2000 οπότε και αποφάσισε να μην ξαναθέσει υποψηφιότητα καίτοι η επανεκλογή του σε ενδεχόμενη νέα κάθοδό του το 2004 ήταν εξασφαλισμένη. Αν ισχύει αυτό που λέγεται, ότι δηλαδή ο μεγάλος πολιτικός οφείλει να ξέρει πότε πρέπει να αποσυρθεί τότε η οικειοθελής αποχώρηση του Νίκου Γκελεστάθη από την ενεργό πολιτική υπήρξε άλλο ένα δείγμα του πολιτικού του μεγέθους. Για την ιστορία θέλω να σημειώσω ότι κατά το χρονικό διάστημα μεταξύ 1981 – 2004 στη δεύτερη έδρα του Νομού – τότε ο Νομός Φωκίδος ήταν διεδρικός – εναλλάχθηκαν εκπροσωπώντας το ΠΑΣΟΚ τέσσερα πρόσωπα προκειμένου να καταδείξω ότι η εδραίωση ενός Βουλευτή σε ένα μικρό Νομό στον οποίο όλοι τον γνωρίζουν με το μικρό του όνομα και όλους τους γνωρίζει με το μικρό τους όνομα μόνο απλή υπόθεση δεν είναι. Ο Νίκος Γκελεστάθης όμως όχι απλώς εδραιώθηκε αλλά κυριάρχησε πολιτικά στο Νομό εκπροσωπώντας την παράταξή μας. Και πώς να μην κυριαρχήσει; Ακάματα συνεπής, δεν έλειψε είκοσι τρία χρόνια ούτε από μία εθνική ή θρησκευτική εορτή της περιοχής, ούτε από μία κομματική εκδήλωση του Νομού, ούτε από μία οικογενειακή στιγμή χαράς ή λύπης φίλου του. Η δε ετήσια αυγουστιάτικη περιοδεία του κατά τη διάρκεια της οποίας επισκεπτόταν κάθε χωριό προκειμένου να εκφωνήσει λόγο στην πλατεία και στη συνέχεια να συνομιλήσει κατ’ ιδίαν με όποιον το επιθυμούσε έχει μείνει στην ιστορία κυρίως γιατί κανείς μας δεν είχε το κουράγιο να την ακολουθήσει από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος. Υπήρξε πάντοτε παρών σε κάθε μικρότερο ή μεγαλύτερο προσωπικό πρόβλημα κάθε συμπατριώτη του που προσέφευγε σε εκείνον για βοήθεια και ευεργέτησε όποιον μπορούσε χωρίς ποτέ να αξιώνει την εκλογική εξαργύρωση της ευεργεσίας αυτής. Κυρίως όμως υπήρξε παρών στο δια ταύτα του Νομού. Όταν η Νέα Δημοκρατία ανέλαβε την Κυβέρνηση, φρόντισε κατειλημμένος από πραγματική αγωνία και ευρισκόμενος σε στενή συνεργασία με την Τοπική Αυτοδιοίκηση πρώτου και δευτέρου βαθμού να εξαντλήσει κάθε δυνατότητα απορρόφησης εθνικών και κοινοτικών πόρων για τη χρηματοδότηση έργων υποδομής στο Νομό. Και πράγματι επί ημερών του η Φωκίδα ασφαλτοστρώθηκε από τη μία ως την άλλη άκρη, δημιουργήθηκαν υποδομές ύδρευσης και αποχέτευσης καθώς και βιολογικοί καθαρισμοί, κατασκευάστηκαν σχολικές μονάδες, γυμναστήρια και κολυμβητήρια, χτίστηκαν εργατικές κατοικίες, επεκτάθηκε το τηλεπικοινωνιακό δίκτυο, ιδρύθηκαν αστυνομικές και πυροσβεστικές υπηρεσίες. Σαν παιδάκι τον θυμάμαι να κόβει διαρκώς κορδέλες.
Η πολιτική δράση του Νίκου Γκελεστάθη ωστόσο δεν περιορίστηκε στα όρια της εκλογικής του περιφέρειας. Η παρουσία του στα γραφεία της Νέας Δημοκρατίας ήταν καθημερινή. Όργωσε όλη την επικράτεια διαδίδοντας τις ιδέες της παράταξής μας. Κυρίως όμως έδωσε κοινοβουλευτικές μάχες καθώς θεωρούσε ότι η Βουλή είναι ο φυσικός και ο βασικός χώρος δράσης κάθε Βουλευτή. Η βαθιά γνώση της πολιτικής ιστορίας της πατρίδας μας και η άριστη ιδεολογική του συγκρότηση τον όπλιζαν με όρεξη να αγωνιστεί για τις αξίες του και να παλέψει για τα ιδανικά του. Υπηρέτησε τη Νέα Δημοκρατία υπό την ηγεσία του Ευάγγελου Αβέρωφ δίπλα στον οποίο ανδρώθηκε πολιτικά τα σκληρά και έντονα χρόνια των μπλε και πράσινων καφενείων, υπό την ηγεσία του Κωνσταντίνου Μητσοτάκη με τον οποίο συνδέθηκε άρρηκτα τόσο πολιτικά όσο και φιλικά και αργότερα υπό την ηγεσία του Μιλτιάδη Έβερτ και του Κωνσταντίνου Καραμανλή.
Χωρίς αμφιβολία απόγειο της πολιτικής του σταδιοδρομίας υπήρξε η υπουργοποίησή του αρχικά στην Κυβέρνηση Τζαννή Τζαννετάκη στην οποία διετέλεσε Υπουργός Μεταφορών και Επικοινωνιών και στη συνέχεια στην Κυβέρνηση Κωνσταντίνου Μητσοτάκη στην οποία διετέλεσε ένα διάστημα Υπουργός Μεταφορών και Επικοινωνιών και ένα διάστημα Υπουργός Δημοσίας Τάξεως.
Η Κυβέρνηση Κωνσταντίνου Μητσοτάκη χαρακτηρίστηκε Κυβέρνηση μπροστά από την εποχή της. Και πιστεύω ότι αυτό ακριβώς το χαρακτηριστικό της υπηρέτησε και ο Νίκος Γκελεστάθης τιμώντας την εμπιστοσύνη με την οποία τον περιέβαλε ο τότε Πρωθυπουργός.
Ο όγκος του έργου του στο Υπουργείο Μεταφορών και Επικοινωνιών αποδεικνύεται από τον αριθμό των νομοσχεδίων που ψηφίστηκαν κατά τη διάρκεια της θητείας του. Όντας πολιτικός προϊστάμενος σχεδόν όλων των ΔΕΚΟ του Ελληνικού Δημοσίου εργάστηκε με στόχο το πέρασμα των υποδομών της χώρας στη νέα εποχή με χαρακτηριστικότερο παράδειγμα ότι επί των ημερών του δόθηκαν οι πρώτες άδειες κινητής τηλεφωνίας ενώ ταυτόχρονα εργάστηκε με γνώμονα τη χρηστή διαχείριση του κρατικού χρήματος με χαρακτηριστικότερο παράδειγμα ότι επί των ημερών του έσπασε τη μέχρι τότε παράδοση και δεν προχώρησε ούτε σε μια πρόσληψη στην Ολυμπιακή Αεροπορία. Εμβληματικότερη ίσως όμως στιγμή της παραμονής του στο Υπουργείο Μεταφορών και Επικοινωνιών υπήρξε η υλοποίηση της πρώτης ιδιωτικοποίησης στην μεταπολιτευτική μας ιστορία αυτής των αστικών λεωφορείων η οποία δαιμονοποιήθηκε και πολεμήθηκε λυσσαλέα από την τότε Αξιωματική Αντιπολίτευση και ανετράπη από αυτήν όταν στη συνέχεια ανέλαβε και πάλι την Κυβέρνηση. Ο σπόρος όμως είχε μπει. Η κοινωνία είχε καταλάβει ότι υπήρχε κι άλλος δρόμος. Πριν μεταπηδήσει στο Υπουργείο Δημοσίας Τάξεως φρόντισε να ονοματοδοτήσει όλα τα αεροδρόμια της χώρας προκειμένου να ονομαστεί και το αεροδρόμιο της Θεσσαλονίκης αεροδρόμιο Μακεδονία και έτσι να κατοχυρωθεί η χρήση του ονόματος από τη χώρα μας ώστε οι βόρειοι γείτονές της να μην έχουν τη δυνατότητα να το χρησιμοποιήσουν σε δικό τους αεροδρόμιο. Άλλο ένα δείγμα διορατικότητας και πατριωτισμού.
Στο Υπουργείο Δημοσίας Τάξεως άφησε επίσης έντονο το στίγμα του. Ορισμένοι τον χαρακτήρισαν αυστηρό. Αν υπήρξε αυστηρός όμως ήταν γιατί πίστευε βαθιά στην αποστολή της Ελληνικής Αστυνομίας και σεβόταν απεριόριστα τον Έλληνα Αστυνομικό. Ήθελε λοιπόν να βλέπει την Αστυνομία να ανταποκρίνεται πάντοτε στο ρόλο της και να καμαρώνει τον Αστυνομικό να αίρεται πάντοτε στο ύψος των περιστάσεων. Άλλωστε τα πεπραγμένα του είναι από μόνα τους δηλωτικά των προθέσεών του τόσο απέναντι στο Σώμα όσο και απέναντι στον εργαζόμενο, για δε τον τελευταίο αναφέρω ενδεικτικά ότι κατά τη διάρκεια της θητείας του διορίστηκαν οι χήρες των φονευθέντων Αστυνομικών ως μόνιμοι υπάλληλοι του Υπουργείου και θεσμοθετήθηκε η κατάταξη στην Αστυνομία τέκνων εν ενεργεία, συνταξιούχων ή θανόντων Αστυνομικών σε ποσοστό 12% επί του συνόλου των εκάστοτε κατατασσόμενων.
Από την υπουργική θητεία του Νίκου Γκελεστάθη και στα δύο Υπουργεία αξίζει τέλος να μνημονευθεί το γεγονός ότι είχε καθιερώσει μία ημέρα της εβδομάδος κατά την οποία δεχόταν τους πολίτες χωρίς ραντεβού στο γραφείο του. Σεμνός και προσηνής ακόμη και όταν κατέλαβε τα ανώτατα αξιώματα, τα υπηρέτησε για τις ανάγκες της κοινωνίας, με απόλυτη επίγνωση της παροδικότητάς τους.
Το τέλος της ενεργού ενασχόλησης του με τα δημόσια πράγματα δε σήμανε και το τέλος της πραγματικής ενασχόλησής του με αυτά. Συμπερασματικά στην πολιτική του διαδρομή υπήρξε τίμιος, προσηλωμένος στο καθήκον, μαχητικός, πιστός στις αρχές του, υπέρμαχος των ιδεών του όχι όμως δογματικός – απόδειξη οι φιλίες του με πολιτικούς και μη προερχόμενους από άλλους ιδεολογικούς χώρους, αυστηρός πρώτα με τον εαυτό του και μετά με τους συνεργάτες του με τους οποίους όμως ήταν ταυτόχρονα και πατρικά δοτικός, ακέραιος, άνθρωπος του αποτελέσματος και όχι της θεωρίας, άξιος.
