Ανοίγει η «Πύλη της Κολάσεως» στη Σιβηρία: Λιώνει ο παγετός στον κρατήρα Batagaika [video, photo]
Ανατριχίλα προκαλεί ο ήχος από το λιώσιμο του μόνιμου παγετού στον κρατήρα που ονομάζεται «Πύλη της κολάσεως» στην Σιβηρία.
Υπό άλλες συνθήκες το τρεχούμενο νερό είναι ένας χαλαρωτικός ήχος, αλλά στη συγκεκριμένη περίπτωση σηματοδοτεί την ταχεία απόψυξη του παγωμένου εδάφους χιλιάδων ετών και κάνει εμφανή πλέον τον αντίκτυπο της κλιματικής αλλαγής.
Όπως φαίνεται και σε βίντεο, το έδαφος του κρατήρα Batagaika ή Batagai καταρρέει. Τα βράχια γύρω από τον κρατήρα, μερικά ύψους έως και 100 μέτρων, θρυμματίζονται λόγω του παγετού που λιώνει.

Το δάσος κόπηκε στη μέση και αυτό οδήγησε στο σχηματισμό της χαράδρας. Τα τελευταία χρόνια, με φόντο τις κλιματικές αλλαγές, λόγω της θέρμανσης, η χαράδρα μεγάλωσε σε μέγεθος κρατήρα».
Το 2009 στην χαράδρα ανακαλύφθηκαν το πτώμα ενός πουλαριού της Ολόκαινου εποχής – περίπου 4.400 ετών – και ένα μουμιοποιημένο πτώμα μοσχαριού.
