Τι κρύβεται κάτω από το μαντείο των Δελφών
Το Μαντείο των Δελφών ακόμα και σήμερα μετά από τόσες χιλιάδες χρόνια εξάπτει τη φαντασία του κοινού, και ενθουσιάζει με τα μυστικά του.
Το Μαντείο των Δελφών ήταν το γνωστότερο μαντείο της Αρχαίας Ελλάδας και του τότε γνωστού κοσμου. Βρίσκεται στους Δελφούς. Θεωρείται ο ομφαλός του κόσμου, γιατί, σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, όταν ο Ζευς άφησε δύο αετούς, έναν προς την Ανατολή και έναν προς την Δύση, συναντήθηκαν στους Δελφούς. Ήταν αφιερωμένο στον θεό Απόλλωνα. Η Πυθία ήταν το διάμεσο, με το οποίο επικοινωνούσε ο θεός, και έδινε τους χρησμούς, που καταγράφονταν. Κάθε τέσσερα χρόνια τελούνταν οι Πυθικοί αγώνες, προς τιμήν του Απόλλωνα, και που προσπάθησε να αναβιώσει ο Άγγελος Σικελιανός.
Στην ίδια περιοχή προϋπήρχε από παλαιότερες εποχές ένα πρωτόγονο μαντείο, στο οποίο λατρευόταν η θεα Γη (μυκηναϊκή εποχή). Αγαλματίδια της θεάς έχουν βρεθεί στα ερείπια του ναού της Αθηνάς Προναίας καθώς και σε αυτόν του Απόλλωνα. Αιτία της ίδρυσης μαντείου ήταν η ύπαρξη ενός χάσματος, από το οποίο έβγαιναν αέρια, επιτρέποντας έτσι το να περνούν οι άνθρωποι σε μια κατάσταση έκστασης. Με τον καιρό, περισσότεροι θεοί λατρεύτηκαν μαζί με τη Γη. Σύμφωνα με την μυθολογία, φύλακας του Μαντείου ήταν ο δράκος Πύθωνας, τον οποίο σκότωσε ο Απόλλων.
Την Γεωμετρική περίοδο, το μαντείο πέρασε υπό την εξουσία του Απόλλωνα, όπως μαρτυράται και από την αλλαγή από πήλινα γυναικεία ειδώλια σε μπρούτζινα αντρικά. Στην Ιλιάδα αναφέρεται σαν ένας πλούσιος και ιερός χώρος. Οι επισκέπτες που ζητούσαν χρησμό από την Πυθία ονομάζονταν θεοπρόπες, και κατά το τελετουργικό του Μαντείου, έπρεπε να καθαριστούν αρχικά με νερό από την Κασταλία πηγή, πληρώνοντας έναν ορισμένο φόρο, το λεγόμενο πελανόν, που δεν ήταν ο ίδιος για όλους,ενώ έπρεπε να προσφέρουν και θυσία στο ναό του Απόλλωνα, συνήθως ένα κατσίκι. Το ζώο έπρεπε να μην είχε κάποιο ελάττωμα, ενώ απαραίτητος οιωνός για να μπορέσει η Πυθία να δώσει χρησμό, ήταν να αρχίσει το ζώο να τρέμει, αφού πρώτα το είχαν βρέξει με κρύο νερό. Ανάμεσα στους θεοπρόπες, υπήρχε μια ιεράρχηση, σχετικά με το ποιος προηγούνταν στη χρησμοδοσία. Οι πρώτοι που δικαιούνταν να λάβουν χρησμό ήταν οι κάτοικοι των Δελφών. Ακολουθούσαν όσοι είχαν τιμηθεί από του Δελφούς με το προνόμιο της προμαντείας και έπειτα οι υπόλοιποι. Μέσα στις δύο τελευταίες ομάδες, η σειρά κανονιζόταν με κλήρο.
Παρόμοιες τελετουργίες κάθαρσης ακολουθούσε και η Πυθία. Ύστερα από κάποια τυπική διαδικασία, κατέβαινε στο λεγόμενο άδυτον, όπου άκουγε την ερώτηση από τους ιερείς που βρίσκονταν σε ένα διπλανό μικρό χώρο που ονομαζότανοίκος. Στη συνέχεια έπεφτε σε έκσταση ενώ οι ιερείς κατέγραφαν και ερμήνευαν τα λόγια που πρόφερε. Την επιμέλεια του Μαντείου είχαν πέντε άνδρες, κάθε ένας από τους οποίους άνηκε σε μια από πέντε μεγάλες οικογένειες των Δελφών που ονομάζονταν Δευκαλιωνίδες. Αυτοί ονομάζονταν όσιοι, ενώ ο επικεφαλής τους προφήτης.Αρχικά οι χρησμοί δίνονταν μόνο μια φορά το χρόνο, την 7η του μήνα Βύσιου, γενέθλια ημέρα του Απόλλωνα. Με την αύξηση της επισκεψιμότητας του Μαντείου, οι χρησμοί δίνονταν την 7η κάθε μήνα, εκτός από τους χειμερινούς, καθώς τότε, σύμφωνα με τον μύθο, ο Απόλλωνας έφευγε από τους Δελφούς και πήγανε στους Υπερβορείους. Οι χρησμοί αυτοί, που η φύση τους μας έγινε γνωστή τόσο από επιγραφές όσο και από τα έργα αρχαίων συγγραφέων όπως ο Ηρόδοτος, αποτελούσαν για τον Ελληνικό κόσμο της εποχής νόμο, κάνοντας το Μαντείο ένα είδος διαιτητή για πολύ σημαντικά θέματα όπως πόλεμοι ή αποικισμοί, δίνοντάς του έτσι τεράστια δύναμη. Οι νόμοι για παράδειγμα της Σπάρτης, εισήχθησαν από τον Λυκούργος με το κύρος του Μαντείου, ενώ οι αποικίες στην κάτω Ιταλία ιδρύθηκαν ύστερα από εντολές του. Την περίοδο του 7ου και 6ου π.Χ. αιώνα, με την αύξηση του ενδιαφέροντος για νέες αποικίες, το Μαντείο των Δελφών γνωρίζει και την μεγαλύτερη του ακμή, καθώς αρκετές αποστολές ξεκινούσαν ύστερα από χρησμό του Μαντείου. Αυτές τιμούσαν τον Απόλλωνα σαν Αρχηγέτη, ενώ αρκετές έπαιρναν το όνομα Απολλωνία.Οι χρησμοί τις παλαιότερες εποχές ήταν γνωστοί για το διφορούμενο νόημά τους. Αρκετές ήταν οι φορές που το Μαντείο δεν κρατούσε αμερόληπτη στάση, αλλά έπαιρνε απροκάλυπτα το μέρος μιας παράταξης, όπως για παράδειγμα στον Πελοποννησιακό πόλεμο που πήρε το μέρος των Λακεδαιμονίων. Όμως, οι υπηρεσίες του δίνονταν προς όλους, άσχετα με την πολιτική κατάσταση που επικρατούσε στις περιοχές τους.
Οι περιγραφές του θρύλου για το Μαντείο των Δελφών που αφορούν την Πυθία και την επικοινωνία της με τον Απόλλωνα μέσω αναθυμιάσεων ανήκαν στην σφαίρα του εξωπραγματικού και ίσως του μύθου, κατά την άποψη ορισμένων αρχαιολόγων. Το 1892 Γάλλοι αρχαιολόγοι άρχισαν ανασκαφές στην περιοχή του ιερού των Δελφών με σκοπό να βρούν κάτι που να αποδεικνύει ότι πράγματι υπήρχε το χάσμα που επέτρεπε στα αέρια ν΄ αναδυθούν και να δημιουργήσουν το κανάλι «επικοινωνίας” μεταξύ Πυθίας και Απόλλωνα.Δεν κατόρθωσαν όμως να βρούν κάτι που να το αποδεικνύει, και έτσι ο θρύλος παρέμεινε στην σφαίρα του μύθου. Δεν ήταν παρά τα τέλη του 1990 που μια ομάδα αποτελούμενη από ένα αρχαιολόγο, έναν τοξικολόγο, ένα χημικό, και έναν γεωλόγο οι οποίοι υποστήριξαν το αντίθετο. Σύμφωνα με την θεωρία τους, ο ομφαλός βράχος, πάνω στον οποίο καθόταν η Πυθία και ανάμεσα στις αναθυμιάσεις έλεγε στους χρησμούς της, βρισκόταν ακριβώς πάνω από ένα χάσμα που είχε δημιουργηθεί εξαιτίας της ολισθηρότητας των υπογείων πλακών, αφήνοντας μία δίοδο ώστε οι αναθυμιάσεις αέριων όπως αιθάνιο + μεθάνιο, να ανεβαίνουν στην επιφάνεια του εδάφους και να εισπνέονται από την Πυθία.
Ο »ΟΜΦΑΛΟΣ» Είναι γνωστό ότι άν κάποιος εισπνεύσει μικρή ποσότητα αιθυλένιου έρχεται σε κατάσταση ευφορίας, και δημιουργούνται παραισθησιακά οράματα. Όταν η Πυθία ήταν στην «κατάσταση» επικοινωνίας με τον Απόλλωνα και ζητούνταν οι ερωτήσεις και συμβουλές, οι απαντήσεις της Πυθίας δίνονταν ασυνάρτητα, εκείνη παραληρούσε και έλεγε ασυναρτησίες. Οι ιερείς του ιερού ήταν εκείνοι που «μετάφραζαν» και έδιναν κάποιο νόημα στα όσα εκείνη έλεγε. Οι Απαντήσεις του Μαντείου ήταν πάντα σοφές και προνοητικές και γι’αυτό το Μαντείο ήταν αξιοσέβαστο και τόσο φημισμένο, και αναπόσπαστο στοιχείο του Ελληνικού τρόπου ζωής. Αυτό που όμως δεν είναι ευρέως γνωστό είναι πως ο αείμνηστος καθηγητής της αρχαιολογίας και Πρύτανις του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών, Σπυρίδων Μαρινάτος το 1958-59, συνέγραψε μια ενδιαφέρουσα μελέτη με τίτλο, «ΔΕΛΦΙΚΟ ΧΑΣΜΑ ΚΑΙ ΤΟ ΠΝΕΥΜΑ ΤΗΣ ΠΥΘΙΑΣ», η οποία απετέλεσε το κύριο θέμα του πρυτανικού του λόγου , στην αίθουσα τελετών του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών, παρουσία του τότε βασιλικού ζεύγους Παύλου και Φρειδερίκης, έχοντας στα χέρια του απτές αποδείξεις για την ύπαρξη του χάσματος που αποτελούσε το κανάλι επικοινωνίας μεταξύ Πυθίας και του «πνεύματος» του Θεού. Επομένως προηγήθηκε στις διαπιστώσεις του κατά τριάντα έτη, από τους αλλοδαπούς επιστήμονες. Αναφέρει ότι η νεώτερη επιστήμη απέκλεισε την περίπτωση του χάσματος επειδή δεν ανακαλύφθηκε από τις ανασκαφές. Σύμφωνα όμως με τις αρχαίες μαρτυρίες , το χάσμα υπήρχε. Πρώτος το αναφέρει ο Διόδωρος Σικελιώτης. Κατ΄αυτόν αίγες που έβοσκαν κοντά ανακάλυψαν τις ιδιότητες του χάσματος διότι μόλις επλησίαζον προς αυτό σκιρτούσαν και άφηναν ιδιαίτερη φωνή. Ο ποιμένας τους όταν πλησίασε και έσκυψε από περιέργεια στο χάσμα, έπαθε τον αυτό ενθουσιασμό και άρχισε να προλέγει τα μέλλοντα. Το ίδιο έπαθαν και άλλοι, οι οποίοι πηδούσαν στο χάσμα και χάνοντο.΄Ετσι έγινε γνωστό το μαντείο και ενομίσθη ότι ανήκε στη Γή.
Ο Διόδωρος έλεγε ότι το χάσμα έκειτο εκεί όπου είναι το άδυτο του σημερινού ιερού. Τα ίδια λέει και ο Στράβων προσθέτοντας όμως ότι από το άντρο που δεν ήταν ευρύστομο ανεφέρετο «πνεύμα ενθουσιαστικόν».Μεταγενέστεροι συγγραφείς μιλούν για ένθεο ατμό, αναθυμιάσεως, πνεύματος λεπτού και πυρώδους (Ιάμβλιχος), πνεύματος ψυχρού ( Ιουστίνος) και τέλος βεβαιώνουν ότι το ρεύμα αέρος ήταν άλλοτε ισχυρότερο και άλλοτε ασθενέστερο. Ο Πλίνιος προσθέτει, ότι η αναθυμίασις ήταν μεταξύ των πρωτίστων ομοίων, οι οποίες δημιουργούσαν μαντική κατάσταση εμπνεύσεως. Ιδιαίτερης σημασίας είναι και η μαρτυρία του Πλουτάρχου, ο οποίος ήταν και άνω των 20 ετών ιερεύς στους Δελφούς. Σε δύο πραγματίες του του Περί των εκλελοιπότων χρηστηρίων και Περί του μη χραν έμμετρα νυν την Πυθίαν, μιλά για τα δελφικά προβλήματα. Το χάσμα και τον εξ΄αυτού αναδιδόμενο αέρο το αναφέρει πολλές φορές. Ουδέποτε όμως είπε ότι το χάσμα ήταν στο άδυτο του ναού. Αναφέρει επίσης ότι η αναθυμίασις δεν ήταν σταθερή, αλλά άλλοτε ήταν ασθενής και άλλοτε σφοδρή. Επικαλείται και μάρτυρες ότι το αναδιδόμενο πνεύμα είναι κατά άτακτα διαστήματα πλήρες ευωδίας. Χαρακτηριστικά βεβαιώνει ότι με την ευωδιά αυτή γέμιζε ο οίκος εντός του οποίο κάθονταν αυτοί που περίμεναν τους χρησμούς και προερχόταν από το άδυτο. Ο τρόπος με τον οποίο μιλά για τον αναδιδόμενο αέρα, οδηγεί στο συμπέρασμα ότι δεν πρόκειται για το άδυτο του ναού, Συγκεκριμένα μεταχειρίζεται την εξής φράση σχετικά με το γεγονός ότι η Πυθία δεν δίδει πλέον έμμετρους χρησμούς ΄Εν εκ των δύο πρέπει να συμβαίνει, ή η Πυθία δεν πλησιάζει την τοποθεσίαν όπου ευρίσκεται το θείον ή η αναθυμίασις έχει σβήσει τελείως και εξέλιπεν η δύναμίς της. «ως δυοίν θάτερον, ή της Πυθίας τω χωρίω μη πελαζούσης, εν ω το θείον εστιν, ή του πνεύματος απεσβεσμένου και της δυνάμεως εκλελοιπυίας».Κατά τα άλλα επιβεβαιώνει την παράδοση του Διοδώρου, περί της ανακαλύψεως του χάσματος από τις αίγες και αναφέρει και το όνομα του ποιμένος, Κορήτας. Μας δίνει επίσης άλλη μια συγκαλυμμένη νύξι για το χάσμα, χρησιμοποιώντας μια σκηνογραφία. Παριστάνει τους ήρωες του διαλόγου, να έρχονται στο ναό, για να καθίσουν στο μεσημβρινό κριπίδωμα και να συνομιλήσουν έχοντας ενώπιόν του το ιερό της Γής.Τότε ο Βόηθος, λέει ότι « και ο τόπος της απορίας συνεπιλαμβάνεται τω ξένω»,ήτοι βοηθά και ο τόπος να γίνει συζήτηση για την σημερινή έλλειψη εμπνεύσεως της Πυθίας.
Δεν γίνεται όμως λόγος για αναθυμιάσεις, αλλά περί Μουσών και νάματος. Εμείς όμως γνωρίζουμε ήδη ότι με το ιερό και το αρχικό μαντείο της Γής, συνεδέοντο οι αναθυμιάσεις του χάσματος. Το ιερό της Γής ανακαλύφθηκε κατά τις ανασκαφές εκεί ακριβώς ότι το αναφέρει ο Πλούταρχος, προ της μεσημβρινής πλευράς του ναού. Ο Α. Κεραμόπούλλος, στον οδηγό των Δελφών (1935) αναφέρει «Είναι το παμπάλαιο ιερό της Γής. Ενταύθα ήτο το χάσμα το αναδίδον πνοήν…». Λίγο μετά την ανέγερση του τότε νέου ξενοδοχείου στην άκρη της πόλης των Δελφών, άκουσε ο Μαρινάτος κατά τη μετάβασή του εκεί το Μάρτη του 1955 να μιλούν για την «ανεμότρυπα» την οποία απέκοψε εν μέρει η χάραξις του δρόμου. O Κεραμόπουλλος, μιλούσε περί «ρωγμής κατά το δυτικόν άκρον του χωρίου». Επισκέφθηκε το σημείο. Βρήκε το χάσμα, έβαλε εντός το κεφάλι του και αμέσως έγινε αισθητή η πνοή του εξερχομένου ανέμου. Φωτογράφισε το σημείο και έγραψε άρθρο στον ημερήσιο τύπο, με το οποίο συνιστούσε στην υπηρεσία Τουρισμού να φροντίσει να μην καταστραφεί περαιτέρω το χάσμα. Τον Ιανουάριο του 1959, ξαναπήγε στους Δελφούς, αλλά το χάσμα είχε εξαφανισθεί. Κατά την νέα διαπλάτυνση της οδού ο βράχος ανατιχάνθηκε και το τμήμα της οπής που είχε μείνει γέμισε πέτρες και χώματα. Βρήκε ωστόσο το μικρό εναπομείνον ίχνος του χάσματος με τη βοήθεια της παλιάς φωτογραφίας. αλλά και πάλι αμφέβαλλε διότι το τοπίο είχε μεταμορφωθεί δραματικά. Όπως χαρακτηριστικά γράφει «την τελειωτικήν απόδειξιν παρέσχεν η αναθυμίασις. Το πνεύμα υπήρχε πάντοτε εκεί, εξερχόμενον δια μέσου των λίθων και χωμάτων. Την φοράν αυτήν ανεδίδετο θερμόν, την δε θερμότητά του καθίστα εντονωτέρα η παγερά ημέρα». Ο Μαρινάτος πίστευε ότι η σχισμή είναι μία και μόνη, η οποία με κατέυθυνση από ανατολικά προς δυτικά, διέρχεται από το ιερό και εξέπεμπε άλλοτε την αναθυμίαση εντός αυτού, πιθανότατα στο ιερό της Γής. Λόγω των συνεχών και σφοδρών σεισμών, πιθανώς να υπέστησαν τα πετρώματα ελαφρά μετακίνηση, από την οποία εφράχθη το ένα στόμιο και ανοίχτηκε άλλα στην Ανεμότρυπα. Το νερό της Κασταλίας μετακινήθηκε πολλές φορές στο παρελθόν και το 1870, λόγω σεισμών.
ΚΑΣΤΑΛΙΑ Επίσης θεωρούσε πιθανό η Ανεμότρυπα να είναι διακλάδωσις του Δελφικού χάσματος ή ακόμη και τελείως ανεξάρτητο χάσμα. Το γεγονός πάντως παραμένει ότι κοντά στο ιερό υπάρχει αυτό το φαινόμενο, για το οποίο έχει μιλήσει η αρχαιότητα και καλύπτει τους διάφορους τρόπους με τους οποίους περιγράφεται το «πνεύμα». ΄Οσον αφορά τις αρχαίες πηγές για το χάσμα επισημαίνει ο Μαρινάτος ότι αυτές δεν είναι παλιότερες του 1ου π.Χ αιώνος. Ο Διόδωρος, οποίος είναι ο πάλαιότερος, έδωσε συγχρόνως αφορμή στην αμφισβήτηση του όλου ζητήματος περί χάσματος και αναθυμιάσεως, διότι μνημονεύει ότι έκειντο εις το «άδυτον» του «ιερού». Επί πλέον, η συχνή έκφρασις ότι η Πυθία «κατέβαινε» εις το άδυτο , οδήγησε σε σειρά παρεξηγήσεων. ΄Αδυτο, θεωρήθηκε το μέρος του ναού, πίσω από το σηκό, που σε μερικούς αρχαίους ναούς υπήρχε χωριστό διαμέρισμα, στο οποίο δινόταν το όνομα άδυτο. Ο ναός του Απόλλωνος, στο τμήμα εκείνο ανεσκάφη εσωτερικώς μέχρι του φυσικού βράχου, ο οποίος συνέβη ν΄ανακαλυφθή συμπαγής και απολύτως αρραγής. Αναμφίβολα λοιπόν εκεί ουδέποτε υπήρξε χάσμα. Επειδή η Πυθία «κατέβαινε» εδέχθησαν λόγω ιχνών βαθμίδων, δύο πατώματα στο άδυτο του ναού. ΄Ηταν όμως πράγματι αυτό το άδυτο του χάσματος; O Kεραμόπουλλος έκανε ήδη την ορθή παρατήρηση, ότι εσωτερικά οι τοίχοι του ναού δεν φέρουν πρόσωπο στο ανασκαφέν τμήμα, επομένως ουδέποτε αυτό προορίσθηκε να είναι ορατό.
ΔΕΛΦΟΙ ΤΟΥ ΠΕΡΑΣΜΕΝΟΥ ΑΙΩΝΑ Οι παλαιότερες μαρτυρίες , οι οποίες είναι όλες ποιητικές, είναι ασαφείς και επιδεχόμενες ελαστική ερμηνεία. Η σχετικά σαφέστερη έκραση είναι Πινδ Ολ. Χρυσοκόμας ευώδεος εξ΄αδύτου ναών πλόον είπε. Σκοτεινότερος είναι ο λόγος εν Πυθ ΧΙ 4-5 , χρυσέων ες άδυτον τριπόδων θησαυρόν. Στο χορικό Ιφ.Τ 1257 αδύτων ύπο, Κασταλίας ρεέθρων γείτων, είναι αδύνατο να συμπεράνη κανείς ποιο άδυτο εννοεί ο Ευριπίδης. Επίσης στις Ευμενίδες ή τον ΄Ιωνα ο αναγνώστης θ΄αποκομίσει τα εξής: Στο ναό υπήρχε «μυχός» , εκεί ευρίσκετο ο ομφαλός (Ευμ.37-40), υπήρχον πέριξ θρόνοι, εφ΄ων η Πυθιάς είδε κοιμωμένας τας Ευμενίδας (47), πάντα δε ταύτα ευρίσκονται εις τον χώρον, ένθα και το άγαλμα του θεού (155). Στον Ίωνα, επαναλαμβάνονται τα περί ομφαλού, όπου καθίζων ο Φοίβος υμνωδεί (5-6), εκεί δε μνημονεύεται ο τρίπους, γύρω από τον οποίο ίστανται οι αριστείς των Δελφών «έσω» του ναού, χωρίς άλλες λεπτομέρειες. Παντού αναφέρεται είσοδος και έξοδος στο ναό και πουθενά «κατάβασις» , ούτε καν ρητώς το άδυτο. Εφόσον λοιπόν και το άδυτο του ναού δεν παρουσίασε ίχνη χρησιμοποιήσεως στα βαθύτερα στρώματα, πρέπει να σκεφθούμε μήπως η κατάβασις, η οποία μαρτυρείται σε μεταγενέστερες πηγές εννοεί άλλο άδυτο, έξω από τον ναό. Ο Διόδωρος χρησιμοποιεί την φράση, ότι το χάσμα βρισκόταν «εν τούτω τω τόπω, καθ΄όν έστι νυν του ιερού το καλούμενον άδυτον». Παρατηρούμε λοιπόν, πρώτον ότι ιερό δεν σημαίνει μόνο ναός, αλλά και το όλον ιερόν, ακριβώς σε αντιδιαστολή προς τον ναόν. Δεύτερον ότι αν επρόκειτο περί ναού, δεν θα ήταν ανάγκη να χρησιμοποιηθεί η φράσις «το καλούμενον άδυτον», αφού άδυτο ήταν κανονική ονομασία του σχετικού διαμερίσματος των ναών. ΄Όταν συνδυάσουμε και την είδηση ότι η Πυθία κατήρχετο στο άδυτο τούτο, οδηγούμαστε στο συμπέρασμα ότι ήταν εκτός του ναού, σε βαθύτερο σημείο, πιθανόν στα πέριξ του ιερού της Γής. Τέτοια άδυτα εντός των ναών στα οποία κατήρχοντο, υπήρχαν και αλλού στην Ελλάδα, όπως στο ιερό του Ισθμού, όπου εντός του περιβόλου του Παλαίμονος περγράφεται από τον Παυσανία «εν αριστερά ναός…έστι δε και άλλο ΄Αδυτον καλούμενον, κάθοδος δε εις αυτό υπόγειος, ένθα δη τον Παλαίμονα κεκρύφθαι φασίν».
