Η δολοφονία του Γεώργιου Α’ έπαιξε καταλυτικό ρόλο στη μετέπειτα πολιτική ζωή της χώρας και τον εθνικό διχασμό
Ο δολοφόνος του βασιλιά Γεωργίου Α’, Αλέξανδρος Σχινάς
Ιδεολόγος αναρχικός, πληρωμένος φονιάς ξένων συμφερόντων ή απλά ψυχοπαθής;
Στις 28 Οκτωβρίου 1912, τα ελληνικά στρατεύματα εισήλθαν θριαμβευτικά στη Θεσσαλονίκη, όταν οι πολεμικές εξελίξεις του Α’ Βαλκανικού Πολέμου υποχρέωσαν την τουρκική φρουρά της πόλης να την παραδώσει στους Έλληνες.
Την επομένη, ο 68χρονος βασιλιάς των Ελλήνων, Γεώργιος Α’, μπήκε πανηγυρικά στην πόλη συνοδευόμενος από τον διάδοχο του θρόνου Κωνσταντίνο, αρχιστράτηγο του ελληνικού στρατού. Λόγω της εύθραυστης κατάστασης που επικρατούσε, ο Γεώργιος αποφάσισε να εγκατασταθεί στη Θεσσαλονίκη για να επισημοποιήσει και να εδραιώσει την ελληνική παρουσία στην περιοχή. Στο διάστημα της εκεί παραμονής του, ο λαοφιλής βασιλιάς συνήθιζε, όπως έκανε ακριβώς και στην Αθήνα, να πραγματοποιεί καθημερινούς περιπάτους είτε χωρίς συνοδεία είτε με ελάχιστη προστασία.
Λίγους μήνες αργότερα, το μεσημέρι της 18ης Μαρτίου 1913 (5ης Μαρτίου, με το παλιό ημερολόγιο), ο Γεώργιος συνοδευόμενος από τον υπασπιστή του κατέβηκε από το μέγαρο Χατζηλαζάρου, το οποίο λειτουργούσε πια ως βασιλική κατοικία, στην αποβάθρα του Λευκού Πύργου προκειμένου να πραγματοποιήσει εθιμοτυπική επίσκεψη στον γερμανό ναύαρχο πάνω στο πολεμικό πλοίο «Γκέμπεν», που ήταν αγκυροβολημένο στο λιμάνι της πόλης.
Η εφημερίδα της εποχής «Εμπρός» παρατηρούσε: «Η αυτή ευδιαθεσία του Βασιλέως εξηκολούθησε και μετά μίαν ώραν όταν η Α. Μ. ήρχισε να επιστρέφη εις το Ανάκτορον. Όταν διήρχετο προ του Λευκού Πύργου, εγγύτατα του πλήθους το οποίον περιεστοίχιζε την κατ’ εκείνην την ώραν παιανίζουσαν μουσικήν, επλησίασεν, ανεμίχθη μετά των πολιτών, ήκουσε μουσικήν και κατά την δημοκρατικήν του συνήθειαν, συνωμίλησε μετά των ανθρώπων του λαού οι οποίοι ευρίσκοντο εκεί. Μετά τούτο, εισήλθεν εις την λεωφόρον της Αγίας Τριάδας».
Στη συμβολή με την οδό Βασιλίσσης Όλγας, τον περίμενε εδώ και ώρα ο Αλέξανδρος Σχινάς: ήταν νωρίς το απόγευμα όταν είδε τον ανυποψίαστο βασιλιά και τον ταγματάρχη υπασπιστή του να περνούν από μπροστά του, τους πλησίασε και πυροβόλησε τον Γεώργιο στην καρδιά από απόσταση δύο μέτρων, προκαλώντας του θανάσιμο τραύμα. Αμέσως μετά, επιχείρησε να πυροβολήσει και τον υπασπιστή Φραγκούδη, αλλά το όπλο μπλόκαρε κι έτσι ο ταγματάρχης πρόλαβε να τον αφοπλίσει και να τον παραδώσει σε δύο κρητικούς χωροφύλακες που είχαν προστρέξει εν τω μεταξύ στο σημείο.
Ο Γεώργιος μεταφέρθηκε στο ιατρείο του «Παπάφειου Ιδρύματος», αλλά οι γιατροί δεν μπόρεσαν να προσφέρουν καμιά βοήθεια, καθώς ήταν ήδη νεκρός. Από το νοσοκομείο, η σορός του μεταφέρθηκε με ανοικτό αυτοκίνητο στο μέγαρο Χατζηλαζάρου. Την ίδια ώρα, ο Σχινάς βρισκόταν πια στο Αστυνομικό Τμήμα Φαλήρου Θεσσαλονίκης, όπου άρχισαν αμέσως οι ανακρίσεις από τον πρωτοδίκη.
Η πόλη τέθηκε σε κατάσταση επιφυλακής, τα εμπορικά καταστήματα έκλεισαν, ενώ μόλις νύχτωσε τα φώτα των δρόμων και των κατοικιών παρέμειναν σβηστά. Ακούγονταν μόνο οι πένθιμες κωδωνοκρουσίες από τις εκκλησίες. Στις 8 Μαρτίου (παλιό ημερολόγιο), σε έκτακτη συνεδρίαση της Βουλής, ο Κωνσταντίνος ορκίστηκε νέος βασιλιάς των Ελλήνων και στις 12 του ίδιου μήνα αναχώρησε με τη βασιλική θαλαμηγό «Αμφιτρίτη» για τη Θεσσαλονίκη, με τη συνοδεία πλοίων του ελληνικού Βασιλικού Ναυτικού αλλά και των Μεγάλων Δυνάμεων. Αφού εκτέθηκε σε λαϊκό προσκύνημα, η ταριχευμένη σορός του Γεωργίου μεταφέρθηκε στον Πειραιά με την «Αμφιτρίτη» και στις 20 Μαρτίου τελέστηκε η κηδεία του, πριν ενταφιαστεί στα ανάκτορα του Τατοΐου.
Και τότε η υπόθεση άρχισε να περιπλέκεται: Ο Σχινάς φέρεται να αυτοκτόνησε όταν -σύμφωνα με την επίσημη εκδοχή- έπεσε στο κενό από το παράθυρο του αστυνομικού τμήματος όπου κρατούταν. Μυστήριο ωστόσο σκεπάζει τον θάνατο του όπως και τα κίνητρα της πράξης του. Στις 22 Απριλίου, ο Σχινάς μεταφερόμενος στον επάνω όροφο του Διοικητηρίου «διέφυγε της προσοχής των χωροφυλάκων και ηυτοκτόνησε πεσών εκ του παραθύρου» (η ανακοίνωση της αστυνομίας).
Το ίδιο ισχύει και για την κατάθεσή του, η οποία δεν δόθηκε ποτέ στη δημοσιότητα. Οι φάκελοι της ανάκρισης φαίνεται πως κάηκαν, όταν στο ατμόπλοιο «Ελευθερία» που θα τους μετέφερε στον Πειραιά εκδηλώθηκε βολικά πυρκαγιά: η φωτιά κατέστρεψε μόνο την καμπίνα όπου φυλάσσονταν οι προανακριτικοί φάκελοι.
Η επικρατούσα άποψη της ιστορικής έρευνας είναι ότι ο δράστης υπήρξε πράκτορας ξένων συμφερόντων: ο βασιλιάς έπεσε έτσι θύμα της γερμανικής διπλωματίας, μιας και η πολιτική του ήταν αντίθετη με τα γερμανικά σχέδια στα Βαλκάνια και την Ανατολική Ευρώπη. Λέγεται ωστόσο ότι σε κατ’ ιδίαν συνομιλία με τη σύζυγο του Γεώργιου, βασίλισσα Όλγα, δήλωσε ότι ενέργησε μόνος του και απολύτως αυτοβούλως. Άλλοι πάλι τον θέλουν πράκτορα των Αυστριακών, ακόμα και των Βούλγαρων!
Το ίδιος το τέλος του Σχινά, που έπεσε ή εκπαραθυρώθηκε από το Διοικητήριο όπου τον είχαν, ενέτεινε τις φήμες και τις εικασίες για τα πραγματικά αίτια της δολοφονίας, δίνοντας ζωή σε αναρίθμητα σενάρια και θεωρίες συνωμοσίας. Πολλοί έσπευσαν να αναγνωρίσουν αναλογίες μεταξύ της δολοφονίας του Γεώργιου Α’ και της αντίστοιχης του αμερικανού προέδρου Τζ. Κένεντι πενήντα χρόνια αργότερα στο Ντάλας των ΗΠΑ, καθώς και στις δύο υποθέσεις το θύμα ήταν ο ανώτερος πολιτειακός άρχοντας της χώρας, οι Αρχές υιοθέτησαν σχεδόν από την αρχή τη θεωρία του «μοναχικού δράστη» με προσωπικά κίνητρα, ο βασικός ύποπτος βγήκε από τη μέση προτού ολοκληρωθεί η ανάκριση, ενώ στο πέρασμα του χρόνου αναπτύχθηκαν ποικίλες θεωρίες για την πραγματική ταυτότητα των δραστών και τη συνωμοσία που κρυβόταν πίσω τους…
Η θολή ταυτότητα του Αλέξανδρου Σχινά
Ποιος ήταν όμως ο δράστης που οι Αρχές έσπευσαν να χαρακτηρίσουν αναρχικό; Ο Αλέξανδρος Σχινάς γεννιέται πιθανότατα το 1870 σε χωριό του Βόλου (ή στη Θεσσαλονίκη, τις Σέρρες και το Ασβεστοχώρι!) ως γιος έλληνα παντοπώλη από το Λιτόχωρο και Βουλγάρας με καταγωγή από τις Σέρρες. Για τη ζωή του δεν υπάρχει ιστορική συναίνεση, καθώς πέπλο μυστηρίου σκεπάζει τα χνάρια του. Ο Σχινάς ήταν πιθανότατα τελειόφοιτος φοιτητής (ή πτυχιούχος, κατ’ άλλες εκτιμήσεις) Ιατρικής στο Καποδιστριακό Πανεπιστήμιο της Αθήνας.
Μιλούσε πολύ καλά την καθαρεύουσα, η σκέψη του ήταν διαυγής και ήξερε άπταιστα γαλλικά. Φέρεται να είχε ταξιδέψει μάλιστα αρκετά στο εξωτερικό. Πρέπει να εργάστηκε για ένα διάστημα στο φαρμακείο του αδερφού του στον Βόλο. Κάποια στιγμή μετανάστευσε στις ΗΠΑ και έπιασε δουλειά στο ξενοδοχείο Μπελβεντέρε της Νέας Υόρκης. Έλληνας σερβιτόρος εκεί (που έδωσε κατόπιν συνέντευξη στους «Times») τον θυμόταν ως μανιώδη αναγνώστη σοσιαλιστικών περιοδικών, ο οποίος περνούσε τα βράδια του στο Μανχάταν πιάνοντας φιλίες με ριζοσπάστες της εποχής. Σύμφωνα με αυτόν, ο Σχινάς ήταν ιδεολόγος αναρχικός εμφορούμενος από σφοδρά αντι-δημοκρατικά και αντι-μοναρχικά αισθήματα.
Έπειτα από παραμονή ενός περίπου χρόνου στην Αμερική, επέστρεψε στην Ελλάδα και σύμφωνα με μαρτυρίες αναμείχθηκε έντονα στο Εργατικό Κέντρο Βόλου, εκδίδοντας έντυπο υλικό. Ο ιστορικός Γιάννης Κορδάτος υποστηρίζει αντίθετα πως «ήταν άγνωστος στον Βόλο», ισχυριζόμενος ότι ο Σχινάς εργαζόταν ως δάσκαλος στην Αγουλινίτσα και την Κατερίνη.
Οι πηγές που τον αφορούν είναι αντικρουόμενες, ενώ υπάρχουν και πρόδηλες βιογραφικές αναφορές που είναι εδώ για να σπιλώσουν το όνομά του. Σύμφωνα με τη λασπολογία της εποχής, ο δολοφόνος του βασιλιά είχε μόνιμη μανία καταδίωξης και νόμιζε ότι συνεχώς τον κυνηγούσαν να τον σκοτώσουν. Στο σενάριο αυτό ο φοιτητής ιατρικής ήταν ομοφυλόφιλος και συνήθιζε να εκβιάζει τους ερωτικούς του παρτενέρ ώστε να βγάζει τα προς το ζην. Στο ίδιο μήκος κύματος, είχε κάνει μικροαπάτες και χαρτόπαιζε, ενώ δήλωνε σοσιαλιστής και διεθνιστής. Τουρκική εφημερίδα φέρεται να έγραψε ότι ήταν και κομιτατζής, γνωστός ως Αλέξιος Κνιάζωφ, καταδικασθείς ερήμην εις θάνατον το 1902 από το Κακουργιοδικείο Μοναστηρίου.
Ιστορικές αποδείξεις δεν υπάρχουν για όλα αυτά και ήταν μάλλον μια ενορχηστρωμένη προσπάθεια σπίλωσής του παρά σοβαρή δημοσιογραφική ή ιστορική έρευνα για τα έργα και τις ημέρες του. Ακόμα και η ιδεολογική του τοποθέτηση ως αναρχικού αμφισβητείται πλέον, καθώς μαρτυρία εδώ αποτελεί η αναφορά των αστυνομικών. Σύμφωνα με αυτούς, ο Σχινάς αρνήθηκε να πει οτιδήποτε για τους λόγους της ενέργειάς του, όταν ρωτήθηκε ωστόσο από αξιωματικό «αν δεν λυπάται καθόλου την πατρίδα του», έσπευσε λέει να απαντήσει πως «είναι ενάντια στα κράτη και τις κυβερνήσεις».
Κατά την ανακριτική διαδικασία, παρουσίαζε λέει αυξημένη ευφυΐα θολώνοντας συνεχώς τα νερά της έρευνας. Πρέπει να κακοποιήθηκε βαριά μέσα στο Διοικητήριο και η υγεία του να ήταν σε κακή κατάσταση (έπασχε από φυματίωση), αν και δεν αποκάλυψε τίποτα. Δεν είμαστε βέβαια σε θέση να γνωρίζουμε την αλήθεια των αναφορών αυτών καθώς οι φάκελοι της προανάκρισης καταστράφηκαν όπως είπαμε βολικά από πυρκαγιά που ξέσπασε στην καμπίνα του αγκυροβολημένου στο λιμάνι της Θεσσαλονίκης ατμόπλοιου «Ελευθερία» όπου φυλάσσονταν!
Η αστυνομία ισχυρίστηκε ότι ο δολοφόνος υπερηφανευόταν για την πράξη του, η οποία θα του χάριζε μια θέση στην Ιστορία, και ζήτησε να δει τη βασίλισσα ώστε να της αποκαλύψει την πραγματική αλήθεια. Εκείνη φέρεται να τον επισκέφθηκε στο κρατητήριο, αν και δεν έγινε γνωστή η συνομιλία τους. «Παπαγαλάκια» πάντως τον ήθελαν να θολώνει ακόμα περισσότερο τα νερά στη βασίλισσα, όταν της είπε λέει ότι ο ιθύνων νους της δολοφονίας ήταν ο ίδιος ο Γεώργιος!
Η ελληνική κυβέρνηση ισχυρίστηκε πως ο δράστης ήταν αλκοολικός, ομοφυλόφιλος και πυροβόλησε τον βασιλιά με μοναδικό κίνητρο τη ληστεία! Λίγες εβδομάδες μετά τη σύλληψή του και αμέσως πριν οδηγηθεί στο δικαστήριο, ο Σχινάς αυτοκτόνησε πηδώντας από το ανοιχτό παράθυρο του Διοικητηρίου. Αυτή ήταν η επίσημη εκδοχή της αστυνομίας. Αν και ο ανακριτής της υπόθεσης άφησε να εννοηθεί ότι ο δράστης «εκπαραθυρώθηκε» από τη χωροφυλακή και αυτός που τον έσπρωξε έξω από το παράθυρο ήταν ανώτατος αξιωματικός της αστυνομίας. Και σαν να μην έφτανε αυτό, η αναφορά των Αρχών ότι η σορός του ενταφιάστηκε σε κοιμητήριο της περιοχής αποδείχθηκε ανακριβής, κι έτσι το πτώμα του εξαφανίστηκε μαγικά.
Εικάζεται πως πίσω από τον χαμό του βρισκόταν η κυβέρνηση, σε μια ύστατη προσπάθεια να καλύψει τα πολιτικά κίνητρα της υπόθεσης…
Οι περιπλοκές της υπόθεσης
Οι Αρχές φρόντισαν από την πρώτη στιγμή να διαδώσουν παντού την ταυτότητα του δράστη και να διευκρινίσουν ότι η δολοφονία έγινε για προσωπικούς λόγους. Ο Αλέξανδρος Σχινάς βρισκόταν αρκετό καιρό πριν από τη δολοφονία στην Αθήνα αναζητώντας δουλειά. Η οικονομική του κατάσταση ήταν πολύ κακή και λόγω του υποσιτισμού είχε νοσήσει από φυματίωση. Κάποια στιγμή απευθύνθηκε στο παλάτι για ενίσχυση, αλλά ο υπασπιστής του Γεωργίου τον έδιωξε κακήν κακώς. Ο Σχινάς έφυγε ταπεινωμένος και εξαγριωμένος. Έτσι οι Αρχές και οι δημοσιογράφοι κατέληξαν στο εύκολο συμπέρασμα ότι δολοφόνησε τον βασιλιά για να τον εκδικηθεί για την περιφρόνησή του και όχι για πολιτικούς λόγους.
Πολλοί ήταν εκείνοι που αμφέβαλλαν για την ταυτότητα του δολοφόνου, καθώς η αστυνομία έσπευσε να τον χαρακτηρίσει ως πρόσωπο του υποκόσμου με περιορισμένη ευφυΐα, ένας περιθωριακός κοντολογίς που δεν ήταν ικανός να οργανώσει ένα τέτοιο έγκλημα. Ο διπλωμάτης Δενδραμής έγραψε στην αναφορά του για τον φοιτητή της ιατρικής που δεν παρακολούθησε ποτέ του τα μαθήματα: «Πρόκειται για έκφυλον αλήτην, ουχί παράφρονα βεβαίως, ζώντα όμως ανισορρόπως δι επαιτείας. Εις τους πλησιάζοντας αυτόν ανέπτυσσε περιέργους ιδέας περί σοσιαλισμού, ότι όλοι οι άνθρωποι εντός ολίγου θα είναι πλούσιοι, ότι δεν θα υπάρχουν πλούσιοι και πτωχοί και ότι οι εργάτες θα εργάζονται μόνον δύο ώρας την ημέραν».
Με την αυτοκτονία (ή τη δολοφονία) του Σχινά, η υπόθεση της δολοφονίας του βασιλιά Γεωργίου δεν εξιχνιάστηκε ποτέ. Ο Σχινάς δεν μίλησε σε δικαστές και δεν ανακρίθηκε δημόσια από εισαγγελέα. Η δολοφονία του μακροβιότερου βασιλιά της Ελλάδας δεν διαλευκάνθηκε ποτέ και καμία ερμηνεία δεν είναι επαρκώς τεκμηριωμένη…
Μετά τις πρώτες εβδομάδες και καθώς η υπόθεση ήταν ιδιαζόντως σοβαρή, τις ανακρίσεις για τη δολοφονία ανέλαβαν ο εισαγγελέας Πρωτοδικών, ο πρόεδρος Πρωτοδικών Βάσης και ο εισαγγελέας Εφετών. Την κρισιμότητα της κατάστασης υπογράμμιζε και το γεγονός ότι η βασίλισσα Όλγα επισκέφθηκε δύο ή τρεις φορές τον Σχινά στο κελί του και σύμφωνα με τις μαρτυρίες αυτοπτών μαρτύρων, μετά την τελευταία επίσκεψή της βγήκε από το κελί συντετριμμένη.
Από δω εκτιμούν αρκετοί ότι ο δράστης τής αποκάλυψε τους ηθικούς αυτουργούς της δολοφονίας. Η βασίλισσα δεν εκμυστηρεύτηκε σε κανέναν το περιεχόμενο των συνομιλιών της, αν και οι αξιωματικοί που υπηρετούσαν στη μεραρχία του πρίγκιπα Ανδρέα ορκίζονταν ότι τον είχαν ακούσει να οικτίρει τους Αυστριακούς ως δολοφόνους του πατέρα του.
«Η ανάμιξις της αειμνήστου Βασιλίσσης Όλγας […] είναι σαφής απόδειξις ότι ευθύς αμέσως εισέδυσεν εις το πνεύμα της η υπόνοια ότι οι ηθικοί αυτουργοί του εγκλήματος ευρίσκοντο πιθανώτατα ενταύθα και ήσαν πρόσωπα ισχυρά προ των οποίων θα εκάμπτετο και θα έκυπτεν η δικαιοσύνη. Προς διαλεύκανσιν του μυστηρίου η αξιοπρεπής και αγέρωχος Βασίλισσα, δεν εδίστασε να εισδύση μέχρι και αυτού του αθλίου δωματίου της ειρκτής και να αντικρίζη κατά μόνας τον απαίσιον δολοφόνον του πεφιλημένου συζύγου της», παρατήρησε λίγο αργότερα ο αντιστράτηγος Παρασκευόπουλος.
Οι θεωρίες συνομωσίας για τη δολοφονία του Γεωργίου.
Πριν από τη δολοφονία, ο βασιλιάς είχε εγκατασταθεί στη Θεσσαλονίκη, καθώς η ατμόσφαιρα στην πόλη ήταν τεταμένη. Τον προηγούμενο Οκτώβριο είχε εισέλθει θριαμβευτικά στην πόλη ως απελευθερωτής και οι Βούλγαροι έφτασαν λίγο αργότερα και έπειτα από αίτημά τους είχαν στρατοπεδεύσει στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Ο Γεώργιος θεωρούσε πως η κατάσταση ήταν ακόμα εύθραυστη και για αυτό παρέμενε στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Μετά τη δολοφονία, οι υποψίες στράφηκαν αμέσως στη Βουλγαρία. Η κοινή γνώμη πίστεψε πως ο δράστης ήταν Βούλγαρος, αλλά έκανε λάθος. Οι τοπικοί άρχοντες της Μακεδονίας έσπευσαν να διευκρινίσουν ότι η ταυτότητα του δράστη ήταν ελληνική για να προλάβουν ενδεχόμενα αντίποινα.
Μάλιστα ο τότε διοικητής της Θεσσαλονίκης, πρίγκιπας Γεώργιος έγραψε στο ημερολόγιό του: «Όταν επήγα εις το νοσοκομείον, όπου είχον μεταφέρει τον καημένον τον Βασιλέα, ήλθε ο Α. Μομφεράτος, ο τότε διευθυντής της αστυνομίας, να μου αναφέρη ότι εις την πόλιν επεκράτει τρομερός ερεθισμός και ότι οι πολίται και οι στρατιώται συνήρχοντο παντού με την πρόθεσιν να προβούν εις αντίποινα. Αυτή η είδησις με έκαμε να συνέλθω κομμάτι. Συλλογίσθηκα πως εάν δεν ελαμβάνετο αμέσως ένα μέτρον, μπορούσαν να επέλθουν ανυπολόγισται καταστροφαί. Διέταξα, λοιπόν, αμέσως τον διευθυντήν της αστυνομίας και τον φρούραρχον συνταγματάρχην Δράκον να σπεύσουν εις την πόλιν και να διαδώσουν παντού ότι ο δολοφόνος ήτο Έλλην»…
Πλάι στην προσωπική εκδίκηση και τον βουλγαρικό δάκτυλο φιγουράρουν άλλες δύο δημοφιλείς θεωρίες, σύμφωνα με τις οποίες ο αγγλόφιλος βασιλιάς των Ελλήνων βγήκε από τη μέση από γερμανική συνωμοσία (που παραμένει το επικρατέστερο σενάριο) ή από (γερμανο-)αυστριακή πλεκτάνη.
Σύμφωνα με τα διαθέσιμα στοιχεία, η κυβέρνηση του Βενιζέλου επιδίωξε από την πρώτη στιγμή να κλείσει την υπόθεση της δολοφονίας στη βάση της θεωρίας του «μοναχικού και παράφρονα» δολοφόνου που έδρασε ορμώμενος από αποκλειστικά προσωπικά κίνητρα. Όταν χάθηκε μάλιστα και το τελευταίο στοιχείο της υπόθεσης, οι ογκώδεις φάκελοι της ανάκρισης, όσοι κρύβονταν στο σκοτάδι μπορούσαν πλέον να είναι ήσυχοι.
