Στη «Θεογονία» του Ησίοδου και στον «Ομηρικό Ύμνο» η θεά Αθηνά ονομάζεται Τριτογένεια, επειδή γεννήθηκε κοντά σε μια πηγή που ονομαζόταν Τριτωνίς. Οι αρχαίοι συγγραφείς διαφωνούν όσον αφορά τη χώρα που βρισκόταν η πηγή.
ΤΙ ΗΤΑΝ ΤΟ ΠΑΛΛΑΔΙΟ;
Aλλοι έλεγαν πως βρισκόταν στην Βοιωτία, άλλοι πως βρισκόταν στην Κρήτη, άλλοι στην Αφρική (τη Λιβύη) και μερικοί στα πέρατα της γης, συγχέοντας την Αθηνά με τον Ωκεανό. Πολλές πόλεις επέμεναν πως η θεά γεννήθηκε σ’ αυτές κι είχαν για επιχείρημα τους πως κατείχαν τα Παλλάδια, τα αγάλματα της Αθηνάς, που είχαν πέσει ως έλεγαν, απ΄ τον ουρανό.
Όμως το Παλλάδιο, το πιο ονομαστό είναι το Παλλάδιο της Τροίας. Γράφει ο Απολλόδωρος ο Αθηναίος «ήταν ένα άγαλμα ύψους τριών πήχεων και παράσταινε τη θεά με τα πόδια ενωμένα και στο χέρι της το δεξιό κρατούσε ένα δόρυ όρθιο και στ’ αριστερό ρόκα και αδράχτι». Κατά το μύθο, το άγαλμα ετούτο το είχε η ίδια η θεά κατασκευάσει σύντροφος της Αθηνάς ήταν η Παλλάδα. Οι δυο νεαρές κοπέλες, η Παλλάδα και η Αθηνά, γυμνάζονταν με ασκήσεις αρκετά βίαιες και μια μέρα τσακώθηκαν κι η Παλλάδα ετοιμαζόταν να χτυπήσει την θεά, μα ο Δίας που φοβήθηκε μήπως πάθει τίποτα η δική του κόρη, έβαλε μπροστά της ως ασπίδα την αιγίδα, τρόμαξε η Παλλάδα απ’ τη φοβερή ασπίδα και η Αθηνά τη χτύπησε και την άφησε νεκρή.
Βαθιά απελπισμένη η θεά, έφτιαξε ένα ξύλινο ομοίωμα της νεκρής Παλλάδας κι έβαλε στο στήθος του την τρομερή αιγίδα και το τοποθέτησε προς τιμή της δίπλα στ’ άγαλμα του Δία. Και προσθέτει ο Απολλόδωρος : «Όταν η Ηλέκτρα (η θυγατέρα του Άτλαντα που απ’ αυτήν ο Δίας απόκτησε τον Ιασίωνα και τον Δάρδανο), μετά την ερωτική τους συνομιλία με το Δία, κατέφυγε κοντά στο άγαλμα αυτό, το «Παλλάδιο», ξάφνου ετούτο γκρεμίστηκε μαζί της στο Ίλιο, όπου ο Ίλος έφτιαξε ειδικό ναό γι’ αυτό και απέδωσε θεϊκές τιμές».Κατά άλλο μύθο, το «Παλλάδιο» το έδωσε ο Δίας στον Δάρδανο, το βασιλιά των Τρώων και η σωτηρία της πόλης θα εξαρτιόνταν στο μέλλον από τη διατήρησή του. Ο Δάρδανος το τοποθέτησε στο άδυτο του ναού (στο μέρος που απαγορεύονταν η είσοδος). Και ένα δεύτερο Παλλάδιο τοποθετήθηκε στη σηκό του ιερού, όπου επιτρεπόταν η είσοδος και του λαού.
Στην «Ιλιάδα» ζητάει ο Έκτορας από τη μητέρα του να πάει μαζί με τις καλύτερες γυναίκες της πόλης στο ναό και να παρακαλέσει την Τρωάδα Αθηνά: «Πάτε στης Αθηνάς το ναό, πάρτε μαζί σας αρώματα και βάλτε στα γόνατα της θεάς τον πολυτιμότερο, το μεγαλύτερο απ’ όσους υπάρχουν στο παλάτι πέπλο, εκείνον που σου αρέσει περισσότερο και δώσ’ της την υπόσχεση πως θα θυσιάσεις στο ναό της δώδεκα δαμάλες, αν θελήσει να λυπηθεί το Ίλιο, τις γυναίκες της Τροίας και τα παιδιά τους, αν δεχτεί ν’ απομακρύνει από τα ιερά τείχη μας το γιο του Τυδέα». Γιος του Τυδέα ήταν ο Διομήδης, ένας από εκείνους που ήθελαν να αρπάξουν το τρωικό Παλλάδιο, για να επιταχύνουν την πτώση της Τροίας. Από τους σχετικούς μύθους με το Παλλάδιο προκύπτει πως η Αθηνά ήταν προστάτιδα του Ίλιου, όπως ήταν και πολλών άλλων ελληνικών πόλεων.
Η ΔΥΝΑΜΗ ΤΟΥ ΠΑΛΛΑΔΙΟΥ ΚΑΙ Ο ΧΡΗΣΜΟΣ
Μαζί με τους χρησμούς για την άλωση της Τροίας ο Έλενος είχε αποκαλύψει στους Αχαιούς ότι η Τροία δε θα έπεφτε στα χέρια τους, αν δεν απομάκρυναν από την πόλη το Παλλάδιο, το ξύλινο άγαλμα που βρισκόταν στο ναό της Παλλάδας Αθηνάς και προστάτευε την πόλη. Η κλοπή του Παλλάδιου ανατίθεται στον Οδυσσέα, που θεώρησε σκόπιμο να μπει πρώτα στην Τροία ως κατάσκοπος για κατόπτευση και συλλογή πληροφοριών. Για το σκοπό αυτόν βάζει να τον κακοποιήσουν, ντύνεται με κουρέλια και μπαίνει στην Τροία. Εμφανίζεται μπροστά στους Τρώες ρακένδυτος και ελεεινός, ζητώντας προστασία από τους Αχαιούς που τον είχαν καταντήσει έτσι. Κανείς δε φαίνεται να τον αναγνωρίζει, εκτός ίσως από την Ελένη, που με σειρά έξυπνων ερωτήσεων προσπαθεί να ανιχνεύσει στοιχεία για την πραγματική του ταυτότητα ή ιδιότητα.
Ο Οδυσσέας με έξυπνες απαντήσεις καταφέρνει να μην προδοθεί. Τότε η Ελένη ζητά από τους Τρώες να πάρει στο σπίτι της τον κακόμοιρο αυτόν άνθρωπο για να τον φροντίσει. Εκεί μαθαίνει η Ελένη τα σχέδια των Αχαιών για την άλωση της Τροίας, αφού πρώτα ορκίστηκε ότι δε θα τον προδώσει. Στη συνέχεια, τον βοηθά να μάθει όσα ήθελε και ο Οδυσσέας, αφού σκοτώνει τους σκοπούς που φρουρούσαν τις πύλες, γυρίζει στο στρατόπεδο των Αχαιών σώος και αβλαβής.
Τώρα που έχει κατατοπιστεί στους δρόμους της πόλης ο Οδυσσέας, ξαναμπαίνει στην πόλη από έναν υπόνομο μαζί με τον Διομήδη, φτάνουν στο ναό, σκοτώνουν τους φρουρούς, αρπάζουν το Παλλάδιο και παίρνουν το δρόμο του γυρισμού. Καθώς περπατάνε, ζητά ο Οδυσσέας από τον Διομήδη το Παλλάδιο, για να το μεταφέρει εκείνος στο στρατόπεδο και να δοξαστεί από τους Αχαιούς. Ο Διομήδης αρνείται, κάνοντας προφανώς την ίδια σκέψη. Τότε ο Οδυσσέας, που βρίσκεται πίσω από τον Διομήδη, σηκώνει το σπαθί του για τον σκοτώσει. Ο Διομήδης αντιλαμβάνεται το σπαθί και γυρίζει να τον αντιμετωπίσει. Καθώς είναι πιο δυνατός, τον νικά και συνεχίζουν το δρόμο τους, ο Οδυσσέας μπροστά και ο Διομήδης πίσω με το σπαθί στο ένα χέρι και το Παλλάδιο στο άλλο. Το περιστατικό φαίνεται πως το αποσιώπησαν και οι δυο ήρωες, γιατί δε γίνεται περισσότερος λόγος γι’ αυτό.
Ο Διομήδης με Παλλάδιο, που φιλοξενείται στη Γλυπτοθήκη του Μονάχου, είναι έργο της αρχαίας Ελληνικής τέχνης. Εικονίζει τον Διομήδη που κρατάει στα χέρια του το Παλλάδιο της Τροίας.Πρόκειται για έργο των χρόνων του Αδριανού, αντίγραφο αρχαιότερου ελληνικού πρότυπου.
Προτού αρπάξουν οι Αχαιοί το Παλλάδιο από την Τροία, συμβούλεψε η Αθηνά τον Οδυσσέα να αναθέσει στον Επειό την κατασκευή ενός τεράστιου ξύλινου αλόγου. Το άλογο αυτό έμεινε στην ιστορία γνωστό ως Δούρειος Ίππος. Και πράγματι, ο Επειός, χρησιμοποιώντας ξυλεία από το γειτονικό βουνό Ίδα, κατάφερε να κατασκευάσει ένα ξύλινο άλογο τεράστιων διαστάσεων με κρυφά ανοίγματα δεξιά και αριστερά, στο εσωτερικό του οποίου χωρούσαν περίπου τρεις χιλιάδες ένοπλοι. Τώρα που οι Αχαιοί έχουν το Παλλάδιο στην κατοχή τους και η Τροία είναι απροστάτευτη, μπορούν επιτέλους να βάλουν σε εφαρμογή το σχέδιό τους.
